Words I only vaguely understand:

erudite - no idea what this one means
chastise - to scold or criticise?
demure - something to do with femininity?
oblique - what?
marred - ruined or damaged?
suave - smooth?

They feel like words you learn in writer school to sound like a writer, and no one else actually uses them...

@thor chastise marred and suave you got for sure. I'm pretty sure the others you guessed are right too
@thor "erudite" exists even in Russian (эрудит), so for me it's a no-brainer (unless it's a "false friend" :-)): "эрудит" means a person who knows a lot of things.

@thor

"Writer school" words are almost as weird as the business "power words" .

Then you mix in the reality that words often have multiple meanings...even ones which contradict one another.

It may be most common in English with all its borrowed words. Congratulations on understanding what you do!

@thor chastise, marred, and suave I use on occasion. The others, hardly ever. I used to use "teetotaler" but have given up on that one. Nobody knows what it means (and are often shocked that there are people who don't drink alcohol.)
Sometimes it depends on the audience. At the Renaissance Faire they like to say, "The two most often asked questions are: Where are the bathrooms? and What is a privy?"

@thor demure means modest and unassuming (more or less)

oblique means neither straight on or at a right angle. Slanting. When refering to speech it means approaching a subject indirectly

erudite means well spoken and educated (again more or less)

Erudite: Learned, scholarly, with emphasis on knowledge gained from books.

Chastise: To punish or scold someone.

Demure: Quiet, modest, reserved, sober, or serious.

Oblique: Not straightforward; indirect; obscure; hence, disingenuous; underhand; perverse; sinister.

Marred: spoiled; damaged.

Suave: Charming, confident and elegant.

@thor
Erudite = smart, well read
Chastise = scold, punish
Demure = shy, modest (to describe a woman)
Oblique = at an angle
Marred = to be spoiled or ruined
Suave = charming, elegant (of a man)

That's just from my knowledge! :"D

@Peannlui @Shutsumon @infernalturtle Yeah, but every time I look them up, I forget them again. They'll never be a part of my active vocabulary.
