It would seem to me that both horizontal and vertical integration at a large scale are problematic. Alphabet (neé Google) is an example of both. There is horizontal integration within search, advertising, AI, biotechnology and autonomous vehicles, and vertical integration with operating systems, browsers, smartphones and laptops. It's not so different from the Japanese Keiretsu or the Korean Chaebol. Blade Runner pretty much nailed it, if you ask me.
