Polititical debates are always full of seemingly rational arguments, but the ultimate motives are always emotional. Almost any argument you can put forth is fundamentally just a ruse for your feelings and desires. You can find all sorts of objective arguments about the superiority of celery over chocolate, but you can't *convince* someone to prefer the taste of celery. Political views are often the same way. One side's preferences make the other side gag. You can't argue with personal taste.
