I can't help but think of a business analyst as a person you bring on board if you don't have people who can think flexibly in your company. It seems like a rather sorry state of affairs that a profession like business analysts should even exist.

More seriously, in my experience, I think much of the problem happens when people who actually perform better at a job do not work at the organization or the organization assigns to such folks the wrong job. So either you end up with a consultant or a power struggle. And for this hypothetical job, the folks actually assigned to it cling to whatever bits of job security they can, often in the form of enhancing the power struggle game.
@vaeringjar What many BAs do basically amounts to what the management should be doing. Needing one would seem to be a sign that your company has lost its brain and must borrow a new one.
