I once walked out of a movie that my girlfriend's uncle had paid the tickets for. I thought it was a terrible movie, and snuck out during a toilet break.
The movie was G.I. Joe.
My girlfriend was very upset about this and an argument erupted in the parking lot.
Who was right?
@thor I mean that is kinda rude, but understandable
@NotTheRealKevin I was in my 20s at the time. My logic then was that I could just let them enjoy the movie, and wait in the parking lot. Had my European cellphone worked in the United States, I could have tried to text her, but I doubt it would've prevented the argument in the parking lot. I was never a good liar, so my less charitable traits have always been a bit too easy to spot for other people.
@NotTheRealKevin It probably did not help that, because she began yelling at me in front of said uncle the moment she came out of the cinemaplex, I was caught off guard, and told the blunt truth instead of making up a white lie.
@thor I think what is rude was letting someone buy you a ticket and then not actually giving it a whole chance. If you had bought the ticket I would't think there was a problem. Its like saying "I don't care about the work you put into earning the money so we can share an experience." and no lying is way worse, it is better than you just told her the truth.
@NotTheRealKevin Well, it was her uncle's work (but that doesn't exactly improve the matter). But there's the thing: It's actually the first time I had ever walked out of a movie. Hell, I didn't even know what proper etiquette for such a situation was, because I had never encountered it before.
@thor I think the fact that it was GI Joe makes it okay. That was an atrocious movie. 🤣
@thor GI Joe was a crime against humanity. I think you were well justified. Still, instead of sneaking out you should have returned and made out. She was just angry she had to sit through it without you to distract her.
@fly She was an easily entertained person. I think she probably enjoyed the movie. We had dramatically different tastes, which probably forms at least some part of the reason for why the relationship didn't last.
@fly I'm not sure if it would've been appropriate to make out in front of her uncle.
@thor with great risk comes great reward.
Although apparently not that great given her taste in quality movies
@fly It was an extremely turbulent relationship and loud arguments had become par for the course at that stage of it. Of course, this meant that the sex was very, very good.
You:
+++ You didn't leave without her (if you argued in the parking lot of the cinema).
--- You could have been just plain honest ("This is ridiculous and I'll wait outside."). That doesn't arouse any suspicion you may have become a victim of the mad cinema axe murderer.
She:
+++ She proved to be able to withstand hard times.
Uncle:
+++ True real life troll.

I can go understand the train of thought that gets
@thor here.
Like. Interacting with people closer than one-liners. Who knew.
@thor either of you is "right" of course, fighting after a bad call doesn't really accomplish anything. But I'd be annoyed to offended to worried if you just disappeared. I get from your pov you don't want to interrupt the movie but it's important to communicate.
And yeah it's rude to your hosts to walk out but it's your choice/call and you weighed it and choose not to sit in a bad movie. I would weigh it differently but I don't think there's a right answer.
@ashleykrista Haha, I wish I could have said it was a carefully deliberated decision. It was more of a poorly thought-out impulsive kind of thing. It's pretty rare for people to look for me and get upset when I disappear. You know, come to think of it, that's actually something Norwegians will do when they want to leave a party. They'll just silently disappear.
@thor Can I start calling that a "Norwegian exit"? 😂😅 Sounds good to me, no fuss and goodbyes, just clean out the door.
@ashleykrista Hahaha! Sounds good.

@ashleykrista Sorry about all the replies. I was getting a 500 Internal Error and thought nothing was getting posted, and now I can't seem to delete all the posts I unknowingly created. Some kind of weird bug that I encounter from time to time.
@ashleykrista Issue ticket for weird 500 Internal Error bug upon posting on Mastodon:
