God damn it. I use macOS at home and Windows at work, and on macOS, the Windows key maps to the Apple key, which is used for all the Ctrl shortcuts on macOS. I have repeatedly hit Win+C on Mastodon posts I want to edit and deleted them, only to find that there is nothing on the clipboard to paste, because I meant to hit Ctrl+C. 😡

@thor same when we come from Windows / Linux and we start using Mac T-T
Whyyyy? T-T

@DarckCrystale Apple introduced the command key with the Apple III in 1980. The command key as we know it today, with Command+C/X/V was introduced with the first Macintosh in 1984. Microsoft introduced Windows, an imitation of the Macintosh user interface, in 1985. With IBM compatibles lacking a Command key, Microsoft used the Ctrl key for this instead. Microsoft introduced a Windows key in 1994, but didn't bother to make it useful, so now it just sits there.

@DarckCrystale
The Macintosh user interface was in turn an imitation of the Xerox Alto user interface. The Xerox Alto computer had a number of function keys; among them Delete, Copy and Move, which probably served as the inspiration for the keyboard shortcuts on the Macintosh. snabeltann.no/media/J1VeTEF2RK snabeltann.no/media/Co8guc6UhV

@thor it open a menu, it's not that useless D: :P

@thor Put autohotkey on your Windows machine, and map Ctrl+C to Win+C.

@thor @tomey
I did that to remap Capslock to Ctrl. No regrets 😀

@skypage @thor An essential autohotkey script for me is one to keep a window always on top, using Ctrl+Tab:

^TAB:: Winset, Alwaysontop, , A

@thor At home I share a keyboard between a windows and a macOS machine via synergy. Definitely use the wrong commands a lot.

@Hjpdy "Let's hide this window... Why is the Share sidebar popping up? Oh, right, this is Windows 10..."
