There aren't many TV documentaries that try to outline a sort of shared history of Europe. I don't mean the wars and all the differences. I mean everything we have in common. In general, not much effort has been put into that, so there isn't really a notion of a united Europe in popular culture. Without a collective awareness of our shared heritage, it's no wonder that the European Union meets such strong resistance.

There's a great deal of history of parts of Europe at each other's throats, too, so I would imagine that also plays a role. There are still places that are uninhabitable due to WWI events.
